Who knows, that first Publishing deal may not be that far off,
after all. The recently launched Macmillan New Writer Scheme may
be your best opportunity yet to make it big in the publishing
world.

Since the project was launched in February, Macmillan has been
receiving 200 manuscripts a month. And in April next year, six
novels will be published and one or two will be released each
month.

The Macmillan New Writing scheme, though, is not without its
critics. A number of online content providers have blasted the
scheme as a “scam”. The Guardian newspaper’s Arts Correspondent,
Charlotte Higgans (www.guardian.co.uk) branded the scheme “the
Ryanair of publishing; it’s like having to pay for your own
uniforms”. Natasha Fairweather, an agent, calls it “an exercise
in futility”. In contrast, Michael Bernard, Macmillan executive
director, describes the scheme as “a way of giving a voice to
talented new authors”.

There’s no doubt, though, Macmillan’s New Writer Scheme is a
departure from mainstream publishing. For example, if Macmillan
decides to accept a novel for its list, the terms are
nonnegotiable; no advance will be paid, however, writers
will receive 20% royalties from sales.

Here’s the deal: if accepted, MacMillan will copy edit books,
but if manuscripts need more detailed work, they will suggest
that writers employ freelance editors. Even then, this does not
guarantee publication.

Barnard says, “This is about Macmillan finding new authors. Like
a lot of mainstream publishers we haven’t in recent years been
accepting unsolicited manuscripts, but only ones sent through
agents. And we are not discovering as many authors as we need.”

“There are literally tens of thousands of writers out there -
and we have a responsibility to help them. We can’t do that by
paying a half million advance to every author.”

According to Barnard, the books will appear in the main Pan
Macmillan catalogue and would be “very posh books” with ribbon
markers, sold at £15. He expected them to become “collectors’
items”.

Scott Pack, of Waterstones, welcomes the initiative. “I think
it’s a fantastic idea,” he said. “When books are presented to me
by publishers they prioritise the ones to which they have given
large advances. But the bestsellers are not necessarily the ones
that have had big advances. This creates a level playing field.”

Pack believes the scheme could be great for spotting new talent,
and points to examples of self-published
books that found success not going the route of conventional
publishing.

We think if you’ve spent years working on your novel with no
success in finding an agent, then Macmillan’s New Writing Scheme
may well bring you the success you’ve been waiting for.

Pros: Once in a lifetime opportunity 20% of Royalties from Sales
Creates level playing field for new talent

Cons: MacMillan will acquire all rights to new manuscripts No
Advance Paid Possibility sharing of editing costs Less control

With the FLEXO Press technology we have, it’s become more practical and a better way of marketing if you provide your target clients with marketing guarantee printed efficiently. From label printing, sticker printing and custom labels, printing is a most important and essential part of marketing that any business can’t do without.

That’s reason commercial printing has become very fashionable. Many have ventured into the printing business that sometimes it’s not so hard to get an unreliable provider that’s only in for the money. With the big demand for commercial printing, it’s not surprising at all that many would want to try their hands on this particular niche.

But if you’re on the other side and you’re the one needing this particular printing service, how can you be sure that the commercial printer you send out your best print job to would give you the results you expect from their side? One way is you have the basics knowledge of commercial printing. You need to know the bare necessities so you can ask the right questions when you’re ready to bring your print requirements to your printing provider.

Choose material for your product labels

Paper product labels best for food labels or for other short-term uses and may be laminated to protect the ink. Film product labels are good for packages that get wet, like shampoo, etc. Product label helps to find out your product easy way. You can also find your label stamped with gold or silver foil for a fancy look of color with many types of label material.

So what do you need to know?

The first things you have to understand are the words associated with commercial printing. These are the jargons such as RGB and CMYK when doing your sticker printing, label printing and custom labels for example. Both are associated with colors and inks that are applied in your printing job.

RGB are for the colors red, green and blue which are used to print the primary colors in commercial printing. By the way, these colors are considered the major colors in commercial printing hence, they tend to be less costly than any other color combinations. On the other hand, CMYK are cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Black represents the letter ‘k’ as it stands for ‘key’, which means the key color in printing – black being the key color. Newer digital label printers are skilled of mixing seven colors for a truer color. Another way, asks for a printed proof of your product label before paying for a full print run. Ask if you can run a small batch so that you can see any color variation that is bound to happen. The variation shouldn’t be bad – just a shade lighter or darker is normal.

These are some of the basic terms for your commercial printer when you hiring a commercial printer to do the job for you. You need to know these basic fundaments for you to be able to ask the right questions that can give you the best results for your print job or business needs.

Beeping Barcodes Are Part Of Our Lives

The invention of barcodes started in 1948 when a supermarket chain expressed interest in being able to have an automated checkout system in their stores. This sparked the humble beginnings of what we know today. The problem was finding a system that was inexpensive to implement, worked quickly and would be applicable to many different types of products.

Some of the first versions of barcodes were very similar to the type that we see today. These innovative ideas involved drawing patterns with ultraviolet ink or making circular patterns to describe the numeric sequences. However, this technology was hindered by the fact that, at the time, engineers were unable to produce a cheap, reliable and easy to use scanner.

It took until 1969 to develop an inexpensive, accurate and fast scanning system. The helium-neon laser scanner proved to do everything that was necessary to read barcodes. It was small and used a mirror to capture and read codes that were some distance from the scanner itself.

Even though the barcodes and scanners were in place, testing and refinement would continue until the late 1970s. At this time, it had become something that was affordable for a business and was easy to use and install. By 1980 most grocery stores in the country were using laser scanners or were waiting to convert to them. Standards were also made, giving rise to the Universal Product Code or UPC, which is still in use today.

Innovations continued in the following decades including hand held scanners and wireless scanners. The codes themselves diversified. From the simple string of lines came two-dimensional barcodes which appear as a series of dots inside of a square or circle allowing more information to be encoded in a smaller area.

The applications expanded as the technology became more accessible. From scanning supermarket food items it was then used for other types of retail sales. Then came use by the post office to help automatically sort mail. The technology was used by warehouses to track and move inventory. They became useful for medical identification of drugs, records and patients themselves when printed on a bracelet. The Defense Department even adopted barcodes.

Today, barcodes are everywhere. They help to process information quickly and accurately. They reduce errors and make changing large amounts of information very easy. They can even be seen in art and as tattoos. They are a symbol of the information technology age. Without them, today’s modern world would slow down dramatically.

Imagine having to label every item in a grocery store with a price tag before putting it out on the shelves. Large pallets of merchandise would have to broken down by hand and checked for accuracy before shipping. Postal mail sorting would have to be done manually.

Fortunately, barcodes are a part of everyday life that will not soon go away. Although their form may change over time, what will remain is the efficiency and accuracy of a simple and inexpensive system that allows information to be gathered quickly from a dynamic source.

WINTER GEISHA WITH UMBRELLA AND LANTERN — Meiji-era Studio View (“Salt Print” # 1)
printing

Image by Okinawa Soba (On the Road for a Week)
From a rare series of ca.1880s-90s full-plate images printed by sunlight on simple "salted paper", and hand-tinted with transparent water colors — but not by me. These large photos are all over 110 years old.

The process harks back to the very beginning of photography when Fox Talbot of England introduced the first commercially viable paper based photographic process to the world (but held himself and the world up with his jealously guarded patents).

Although the first prints were made from waxed PAPER NEGATIVES called CALOTYPES, these "Revival Salt Prints" seen in the 11 prints posted here were made with GLASS NEGATIVES.

The print paper had no emulsion layer (no collodian, albumen, or gelatin), and was developed right into the fibers of the PLAIN PAPER they used. As the tinting was applied, it soaked immediately into the paper, living up to the literal meaning of SATURATED color. As you can see here, both the photograph and color that saturated the paper have remained rich and vibrant.

However, a few photographers who also went down the salt print road were not so lucky, as poor processing and underexposed images tended to have fading problems.

That being said, a well done Salt Print is a beauty to behold.
